There are Sweetbay cultivars that are more evergreen than the average M. virginiana. The australis var. for example, and some named cultivars (Moonglow and Henry Hicks). I would think they would have more winter interest.
Also, M. grandiflora has many interesting cultivars. I'm thinking of planting a 'Greenback' in the yard. The backs of the leaves are not so brown-colored, but more of a lighter green, giving the whole plant a more tropical look, IMO.
