I just put C-9s and a thermocube on my Butia down in Salisbury, Md. Although the plant is maybe 4.5 to 5 feet tall, the trunk of it is only about a foot high. I carefully wrapped around the base with a 25-light string and it was easier than I expected to put them near the base and crown without hitting petioles.
If the plant survives the winter and grows like it did this year, I might have a harder time next year! The topgrowth on that plant is really dense. Wish I had taken a photo to share. I just bought it this spring and it's obviously quite happy with it's new home - to date, anyway. Keeping my fingers crossed!!!
