Hey M, Sorry I was out of pocket there for a bit ... so far all the boxes of lights I've seen are labeled prominently if they are LED. Jake is right, too ... they don't look the same and aren't made the same due to the lack of heat, which is exactly why we don't want them!
The Virginian makes a good point - some of these palms can get fried. I don't have enough experience to speak on that. I've read on other boards that people have literally fried their palms, but sometimes I think they were either exaggerating or did something really silly. The Washy we protected last year, by building a greenhouse around it and lighting it up with C-9s, sailed through the winter beautifully and was RIDICULOUSLY warm in there (100s some days). But, that particular type of palm appears to be pretty capable of handling it. (Or maybe I just got lucky!) I don't know what to do with a Butia or how it can handle heat.
If you are just swaddling a palm with C-9s for some heat and, probably as helpful (others chime in here, cuz I'm guessing) - air flow? - then that is different than enclosing the entire palm and heating a small "greenhouse."
More on the guessing thing ... frost has to settle ... and depending where the palm is situated ... wouldn't having a garland of C-9s around its critical pieces and parts create upward air flow since heat rises? So in other words, even if it got cold enough to frost the palm, the frost couldn't settle - ??? Anyone - ???
BTW I am sooooo worried about tonight! I haven't taken anything in yet! We just finished winterizing the gazebo today, and with the warmer temps forecasted, I thought I'd try one more week. I didn't know until the 10pm news that frost was in the forecast! Aaaggghh~~~!!![]()
