The LEDs won't provide any heat ... you want the good old fashioned kind!
Last year I strung the C-9s around the upper trunk/crown area, since that is the growth point we're trying to protect. Worked really well with the washy that was enclosed in plastic.
Since the whole plant was enclosed, I didn't bother with putting lights on the leaves (other than the spear area).
