Padre Pio was canonised on 16th June, 2002 as Saint Pio of Pietrelcina. Padre Pio faced rejection by three popes there being a belief at that time that he was a liar and/or a schizophrenic.
Most human beings are sceptical when deeply religious people appear as witnesses to the supernatural/paranormal, especially so when the claimant's character appears as flawed as the next human person.
In the particular case of Padre Pio there are hundreds of testimonials to his extraordinary gifts filed with notaries registering in great detail the experiences of persons on the receiving end of Padre Pio's interventions (before, and after the friar's death) on their behalf.
I have no personal feelings on the matter of alleged supernatural events other than preferring to approach such claims with great scepticism. On the other hand I also believe that there is much more to the human person's relationship with the divine mystery than rational explanations can ever attempt to explain.
The Wikepedia page on Padre Pio is as pragmatic as I can discover.
I have copied/pasted these words from a Catholic discussion board:
His canonization miracle involved the cure of Matteo Pio Colella, age 7, the son of a doctor who works in the House for Relief of Suffering, the hospital in San Giovanni Rotondo founded by Padre Pio. On the night of 20 June 2000, Matteo was admitted to the intensive care unit of the hospital with meningitis. By morning doctors had lost hope for him as nine of the boy´s internal organs had ceased to give signs of life. That night, during a prayer vigil attended by Matteo´s mother and some Capuchin friars of Padre Pio´s monastery, the child's condition improved suddenly. When he awoke from the coma, Matteo said that he had seen an elderly man with a white beard and a long, brown habit, who said to him: "Don´t worry, you will soon be cured." The miracle was approved by the Congregation and Pope John Paul II on 20 December 2001.

I found the following to be a very interesting take on the relationship between miracles and physics. Much more so than the customary scientism served up by progressive Christians.
