In a cynical world where the media spends most of its time publishing all that is wrong with human behaviour, beneath the surface much worth reporting is ignored for it speaks of the good that men do, in secret. Little unspeakable acts of kindness that we take for granted, knowing well that we may well have been on the receiving end of an act of loving support when we needed it most.
The evil that men do lives after them; the good is oft interred with their bones. ~William Shakespeare
No good deed goes unpunished is perhaps a cynical response to a supportive intervention that remedies a traumatic scenario, leading the villain to seek revenge for having been exposed for their self serving behaviour. The consequences for being the good guy can encourage people to keep their distance, knowing that they may well become the victim should they intervene to right, a perceived wrong. Here lies a dilemma for it is within the power of most of us to intervene to set right, that which needs putting right. Having weighed the consequences of intervening the would be hero chooses to stand, and wait for life can become over complicated.
It is often said that heroes are not born, rather made by the circumstances that mould the human person into all that they wish their fellow man would become.
Leo Tolstoy reminds us that believing that the behaviour of the human person should change to reveal our dreams of a better life for all.... that, that change in behaviour should begin with us.
Beware of practicing your righteousness before men to be noticed by them; otherwise you have no reward with your Father who is in heaven. ~ Matthew 6:1
