“In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.” ¯ Albert Camus
When a child I discovered that the word live spelt in reverse, spawned evil ; reminding me of the ancient adage evil is, as evil does. Evil is, as evil does simply informs us that evil is really a matter of how we behave, not who we are, or what role we fill in society.
Religious tradition predictably portrays evil wearing a mask of ugliness, opposed to all that the gift of life is born to become; an external influence set apart from the human being calculated to destroy all that is good, and creative towards serving the common well being.
Good can exist without evil, whereas evil cannot exist without good. ~Thomas Aquinas
Aquinas is effectively saying that to know the difference between good, and evil we must through experience learn that evil is self destructive. Thus, every human person will face temptation, providing us with a choice to yield to self deception that we are doing nothing immoral/criminal, or rejecting the allure of that which is contrary to all that our interior life ( the invincible Summer ) pleads with us to reject.
Here lies the dilemma for the human person can be mesmerised by that which tantalises the senses yet hardly addresses our need to create happiness, and fulfilment through our relationships with those who by chance enter our life to add value to our self esteem.
Happiness is secured through virtue; it is a good attained by man's own will . ~Thomas Aquinas
There are those whose self estimation encourages them to believe that their dreams must be satisfied at any cost when abusing their neighbours. Our choices evidence our free will to do as we please, for which we must take responsibility when ever the piper comes calling asking for payment.
Poetic justice may appear as a conscience driven visit reminding us that redemption is available for all, when we of our own free will choose to reverse all that has driven us to serve our selfish ambitions. This is the beginning of our salvation, leading us to accept the hand of Divine Providence, shepherding us out of our blind alley into a life filled with all that is life creating , born out of our free choice to accept the invitation of The Saviour to follow His way.
To be a Christian means to forgive the inexcusable, because God has forgiven the inexcusable in you. ~ C. S. Lewis
