Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the LORD's purpose that prevails.
The American author, and journalist Allen Saunders was perhaps inspired by this Biblical verse to write:
“Life is what happens to us while we are making other plans.”
Despite the wild excitement of my pals dreaming of becoming engineers, technicians, teachers, football players etc., my last year in school helped me understand that I had no idea what I wanted to do, nor had any dreams that I could follow; I simply moved with the flow of life's current shifting me to serve its purpose.
The hero narrative that populates literature reaching back hundreds of years addresses the adventures of pioneers who have chosen to follow their heart's invitation to explore all that life has in store for them.
Paul of Tarsus had his life turned upside down when travelling along the road to Damascus, learning that all he had previously understood had been turned on its head by an incident that he could not explain.
Changing our direction should not be limited to New Year's resolutions, rather should be our response to that internal inspiration inviting each of us to better know our purpose.
A purpose filled life needs be engages us to better understand that our perceived failures are in reality experience, the bitterest of teachers moulding us to better respond to our life's purpose always inviting us to follow its guidance.
When feeling uncomfortable over following any plan of action reflect, and reconsider whether the intention is worthwhile when ones feelings speak otherwise.
Divine Providence is always inclined to advise us how best to follow its purpose in our life, by intervening at the appropriate moment with a reminder, that self serving objectives oppose The Father's plan for our life.
The Divine Presence does not hinder our choices, rather makes us feel uncomfortable when our plans are contrary to serving the common good. Those who ignore that warning signal soon learn that the consequences of their failure to heed Divine Wisdom's counselling, is a hard lesson appealing to us not to ignore the next advice flashing within our conscious awareness that all is not well with our proposals.
Proverbs 4
6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you. 7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.
