Abortion remains illegal in Ireland, and Northern Ireland. Irish women seeking an abortion travel to England where abortion is not illegal. Dublin to Holyhead is just a few hours by ferry boat, or one hour Dublin/London by plane. In other words should the referendum result reaffirm the current illegality of abortion in Ireland, Irish women will continue to travel to England. What ever the result of the Irish referendum we can be certain that most voters will have made up their minds without worrying over the advice being offered by their local priest, for the Irish are well educated and no longer subject to the political, and ecclesiastical pressures that prevailed in Ireland until the 1960s.
