Nothing which is true or beautiful or good makes complete sense in any immediate context of history; therefore we must be saved by faith.
Nothing we do, however virtuous, can be accomplished alone; therefore we must be saved by love.
No virtuous act is quite as virtuous from the standpoint of our friend or foe as it is from our standpoint. Therefore we must be saved by the final form of love which is forgiveness.”

The events on the road to Emmaus are described in Luke 24. http://www.usccb.org/bible/luke/24
The man asked, “What is this conversation that you are holding with each other as you walk?” Cleopas and his companion were taken by surprise for the stranger appeared not to be aware of the crucifixion of their teacher, Jesus of Nazareth.
That the two apostles only recognised Jesus when He broke bread is perhaps an indication that they needed evidence that was familiar to them, for His presence with them was not sufficient to open their eyes.
Luke 24 is offered to us as the template of the journey that The Saviour makes with each of us every day, opening our eyes, revealing Himself to us through so called accidents of chance, or synchronous incidents that astonish us to where we are bewildered by a pattern of coincidences emerging. Then we begin to take notice, assisting us to begin our walk of faith with our greatest friend, and trustworthy travelling companion.
John 14:21
"Whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me. And he who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I will love him and manifest myself to him.”
