: condemnation. Condemning the sinner (which
: the Lord shows us we must not do) and
: condemning sin which the Lord does when He
: says "Sin no more".
But you're not getting this from the text because the only reference to condemnation is Jesus saying he won't do it.
And given that Jesus explicitly rejects condemnation, the reference to the type of condemnation (sinner or sin) is not there; it doesn't come from the text.
: No, he condemned sin.
In the context of unequivocally rejecting condemnation of the mob that would exercise their religious duty to judge and condemn a sinner because of the sin, to the point of brutal execution, Jesus invites the woman to change her life.
This is the essence of the 'Good News'. The woman can now see that she no longer has to fear condemnation of others (and herself!). Her invitation to change is not because of condemnation, it is because of compassion and mercy. The misery of sin was clothed with the mercy of love. Jesus’ only judgement is one filled with mercy and compassion for the condition of this sinner.
: I'd doubt Francis would see Augustine's
: logic "tortured". He seems to be a
: fan.
Not in his interpretation of this Gospel account, apparently.
