The 'nihil obstat', apparently the basis of your critique of the writer and, by association, Alex, doesn't exist.
To quote a written text in the context of a broader point you're trying to make, doesn't mean you support that writer generally, nor does it mean you condemn that writer generally.
In fact, Alex makes his views clear: 'I cannot discover anything New Agey in Spalding's fictional accounts ...'. That would have been Alex's chance to confirm your 'nihil obstat' suspicions, but Alex, alas, didn't cooperate.
Undaunted and based on the flimsiest of 'possible' interpretations you continue.
I'm sure our intrepid readers will give this view the consideration it deserves.
