: The information on Wikipedia clearly
: identifies Spalding as holding ideas and
: engaging in practices we'd now place under
: the umbrella of "New Age".
:
: Yes. Wikipedia has that clear view.
:
: But Wiki is not an authority in the sense
: that it seeks to make a judgement about a
: writer in relation to the edicts of the
: Catholic Church.
:
: You're doing that.
:
: But, even if you could justify that opinion,
: it doesn't therefore follow that the quote
: above is wrong, heterodox, unreasonable or
: whatever else you may ascribe to it.
:
: In your original response to Alex, you
: didn't deal with the content of the quote
: but condemned it by association; an
: association base on your opinion.
:
: Later you made direct reference to the quote
: by speculating what 'inner voice' might
: possibly mean.
:
: Given your interpretation is anything but
: inevitable and that a reader 'might
: possibly' interpret such a phrase in an
: orthodox way, it's a very tentative
: criticism.
:
:
: It may
: not be academically credible to you or
: others but I don't think it's a crime to
: point out the information Wikipedia has
: provided.
:
: Not at all and I have no requirements for
: 'academic credibility'. I'm not concerned
: about quoting from Wiki -- quite the
: opposite, I use it often! -- I'm concerned
: about the conclusion you come to and its
: relevance to the original quote.
:
: Numerous other sources confirm
: Spalding's "new age" thinking. I
: have posted several throughout this thread.
: Similarly I don't think it's a crime to
: reiterate the Church's teaching on New Age
: ideas and practices.
:
: It certainly is not a crime.
:
: It's not for me to
: "condemn" Spalding but it's clear
: the thinking and practices he espouses are
: "condemned" in the sense of their
: incompatibility with Catholic teaching.
:
: It's clear to you, Pete. You're entitled to
: that view.
:
: I have
: provided evidence the Church condemns New
: Age ideas and as I just pointed out to Alex*
: Spalding was a member of and his writings
: inspired by the New Thought movement, a
: group that taught ideas that our now
: espoused by modern "New Age"
: proponents.
:
: You have.
:
: It's your opinion that I seek to
: "condemn" Spalding. I've pointing
: out the incompatibilty of his ideas with
: Catholic teaching.
:
: Yep. You've made your opinion clear.
:
: Alex has presented a piece in which he seems
: to want to impart his views on the correct
: spiritual and religious life to board
: readers. He includes in this a quote from
: Spalding which also contains prescriptions.
: I have attempted to point out that
: prescriptions by and emanating from
: Spalding's thinking could well be deeply
: flawed,
:
: Not really. You actually haven't directly
: addressed the 'piece'. You haven't actually
: addressed how it is 'flawed', deeply or
: otherwise. You directly address the notion
: of 'inner voice' later in the string, but
: can only muster a 'quite possibly'.
:
: in the light of Catholic teaching
: (this IS a Catholic discussion board!)
:
: Indeed! When the Catholic Church wants to
: condemn an individual, it does so with
: authority. When it doesn't, it's our
: opinions. Catholics can have different
: opinions.
:
: given
: the "new age" ideas that Spalding
: held and practiced. If readers decided to
: investigate Spalding's ideas and writings
: further and attempt to "listen to the
: inner voice" as prescribed by Spalding
: it's very likely they go down a path of new
: age thinking and practice that is erroneous.
:
: Very likely? Very speculative.
:
: I've attempted to make the reader aware of
: this for their own good according to my
: beliefs and knowledge. Consider it a public
: and Christian service. You're welcome!
:
: And I'm disagreeing with your conclusions. I
: guess the reader will make up their own
: minds. Lucky readers, eh?
:
Yes, if they now go seeking out the works of Baird Spalding for guidance and inspiration upon the apparent nihil obstat of Alex ipso facto his quoting Spalding as part of his "sermon" they've been alerted to potential pitfalls.
Pete
