it does not mean that he is somehow channeling God and repeating God's words verbatim.
If a lawyer, for argument's sake, tries to change or shift the order of the words in an ex cathedra pronouncement (fatwa) so that the meaning is slightly changed, that lawyer will also be anathematised.
Words formalised by councils and fathers of the church and esp popes of the modern era (after Vatican I), have been taken by most traditional Catholics as coming straight from God's mouth (straight form the horse's mouth, as they say), and I am not joking.
Kung was ridiculed and called silly by these people, and traditional Catholics dread to be likened to Kung.
