A higher standard of conduct is demanded of those who claim authority to speak and act for God. It is not a defense that Cardinal Law took and acted upon bad advice from psychiatrists. The responsibility remained with the Archbishop; he cannot shift the blame to others.
"The Devil made me do it" is not a convincing argument.
