In 1937 Teilhard wrote “The Phenomenon of Spirituality” [3] at sea on the “Empress of Japan.” The ship conveyed him to the United States where the 1937 Mendel Medal was conferred on him by the Augustinians’ Villanova University in recognition of his works on human palaeontology.[4] He made a speech about “Evolution, Origins and the Destiny of Man.” The “New York Times” [19 March 1937] portrayed Teilhard as “the Jesuit who held that man descended from monkeys.” Some days later, he was to be granted an Honorary Doctorate of the Catholic University of Boston. But the award was cancelled at the last moment. The university “authorities” had listened to the Journalists rather than to the Jesuit priest and researcher.

obedience to mission to chinese instead of digging bones in gobi is far more important than medals and horary degrees xavier the real jesuit missioner was honoured in heaven for degrees of holiness-any fool can get honorary degrees[SEE BELOW] versus degrees of holiness through being a humble missioner in china versus globe trotting show pony
