: The navy and white outfit in the photo on the
: left is the student's version. You can see
: that the collar is larger and there are gaps
: in the closure. Mine is in the photo on the
: right. I've never seen the beaded hat
: before. Maybe my suit looked so dressy that
: there was a thought that a beaded hat would
: be the right thing. It looks lovely, but
: totally inappropriate to me, and I'm glad
: they came up with the great straw hat
: instead. Seems like a shame, though, that
: they didn't use that hat for a cocktail
: dress at some time. I also redid the red
: sundress. That one baffled me, since the
: design seemed to be so simple. At this point
: in the Gene line, we were all doing fairly
: detailed and sophisticated couture for Gene,
: and this seemed like the kind of dress we
: were choosing not to do, because anyone who
: could sew would be able to do this for
: themselves. Anyway, I refined the fit and
: made up the pattern, and secretly hoped they
: wouldn't use it in the line. The sticking
: point seemed to be that Joan wanted a knit
: sweater that didn't just look like it was
: sewn from knit fabric. Of course, the only
: alternative is to do an actual knit sweater,
: and I don't think that it was feasible to
: get done at their factory. So, the sundress
: remained just a sample, sweet, but less
: original than most of what was being
: produced for the line. I think it's
: interesting that in the photo on the right,
: they obviously took the circle skirt and
: kind of hitched it up into some side back
: drape...maybe in an attempt to make it look
: more interesting. All this seems like a
    : lifetime ago now!
