Alcatraz is growing more and more fond of this clever mare by the second. But he resented his surge of odd affection. He saw it primarily as a weakness.

So, to mask the fact that he could tolerate her company for more than a few seconds, he settled on giving her the hairy eyeball as her winds spoke for her.

He watched as she thought – and somehow, he was sure he knew what she was thinking of. Who had bitten him. It had taken him by surprise to see an old ally of his. “Yes,” he said succinctly, to everything her winds had just said. But for some strange reason the mare that stood before him compelled him to explain, something he had never encountered in conversation before. For some strange reason, he felt as if she needed to know more than he was usually inclined to give.

“Severus was an old ally of mine.” He paused, surprised already at how much he had spoken. How much had been said without a single insult exchanged. Extraordinary. “I encountered him here – I had not seen him in years.” He remembered the rare occasion where for once in his life he exchanged brief pleasantries with the stallion. “And he bit me. Was sneaky about it too.” His lips turned in a wry smile, his eyes sparkling as he recalled the obscure memory.

He inclined his head slightly, his eyes never once leaving Fenris. Though he was no horse to idly chat with on a dull summer’s day, he found himself liking her company.

Somehow, the idea of having an old nag constantly whispering "words of innocence" did not appeal to him.

“Should you give it to me, I promise I will return it.” Sure, he breaks skulls and bones for a living.

But not promises.
