I don’t know what exactly the heavens were thinking when they created Stymie.
She is almost like a rift – a tapestry of matter that belongs neither here nor there, perfectly adept to the quiet of night, to speaking with the impossible and also with the mundane. She may look like Kurai before his transformation – long legs, somehow delicate, but with her there is a sort of transcendental whimsicality that originates in the still emerald depths of her distanced emerald eyes.
For her whole life, she has wandered between two different worlds.
The only constant is Nightshade, who presently drifts, shadow-like, between Stymie’s obsidian legs. Crystalline eyes (reminiscent of Stymie’s father’s, somehow, cold like stars in the night) watch the pale, beautiful mare emerging from the darkness.
Stymie feels Nightshade, wary, alongside her.
Aquila’s words confuse her at first, and she inclines her beautiful dark head to one side. Earthly relations perplex her – she finds it difficult to assume a place in this world. Perhaps if she stayed in one place long enough, she wouldn’t have this problem. But then, at once, her entire face lights up – those emerald eyes flash a brilliant, magnificent light and a joyful smile slides across her dark countenance. “Mother!” she cries, and her long forelegs fold beneath her. Deer-like, she leaps forward, her mane cascading in a glossy, silken wave beyond her and then crashing around her swan-neck like a wave.
Nightshade vanishes. Stymie halts suddenly, her eyes diverting up to where the weasel-like, star-eyed shadow reappears, hovering above Aquila’s haunches.
“It is you,” says Stymie happily, looking from her mother’s beautiful face to Nightshade, who would only dare approach Aquila if she really were Stymie’s blood relative.
Shades are, in any case, exasperatingly fickle.
“How did you get here?” Stymie asks.
The same way you did, Nightshade quips, glancing up over Aquila’s shoulder at Stymie. Don’t you feel her heart?
