Marshall does not expect her to declare her undying devotion for him and only him. He knows of Alshain, does not try to wretch her away from him. He only wanted her to know, but he could see now that it was foolhardy on his part. His mind itched to touch hers to jumble her thoughts so she could forget but he knows that it’s not in his power, knows it’s something cruel that he could not do. He sighs softly her.
He can hear the whisper of something else in her thoughts but he cannot understand it. He wonders what the dark trail could be and his eyes trail curiously to the scar from the Shard. A frown curls his lips, shadows his eyes when she turns away and if he had known about the way to free her, yes, he would have taken it from her. He would have done everything in his power to rid her of the Shard, to save her from its maliciousness. But he knows that when she had turned from him that it was going to be a long while before he sees her again. He sighed softly, his eyes and head falling away from her. When he speaks again it is soft. “Ariel has wanted to see you. Would you like me to send her to you?” He does not know if she will say yes or no.
He looks back at her, sadness in his eyes as he looks at the back of her head and knows he will treasure their daughter all the more now without her. He remembered following Saphira around throughout her whole pregnancy, but all that had been before Alshain. He had made such a nuisance of himself, always worried for her and the baby she carried. He smiled slightly with the thought. “I know you don’t want me to search for you, but if you need me, ever, you know where I am or call my name and I will come to you forever.” He manages to press his lips to her neck over the scar. “You hold my heart and my honor Saphira. I will never forget.” When he pulls his lips away, he can smell blood and knows its on his nose.
