Saphira knows much of how Alshain feels. She doesn’t need to be scholar to read his mind. Having touched it on a depth greatly more advanced than even an Oracle was capable. She had brought him back from death, and they were linked in soul and heart. As if by the very mention of her heart, the falcon scar on her chest began to bleed. Droplets of blood spiralling down her leg. She is thinking of her Army, the one she had been forced to leave behind. She had been the Commander…but she would have followed Alshain anywhere. Just as he left for her without a second thought. They were in this together. No matter what. Right?

His next words however cause her eyes to freeze. Her heart skips a beat erratically at the mention of her son. Baraqel. Her beloved Baraqel. She owed him more than anyone. Her mind goes to a dark place then, a place she’d hoped to escape forever. But it pulled her back as though she’d never left, and she cringes away from him. Her eyes turn apologetic, although he would not see. A tremor runs down her body, but he is speaking again, and she forces herself to listen.

Kratos, one of Alshain’s other children. From a time, a life before her. She loves him as she would her own children. Alanna, Dusan. Again that dark place swirls around her. She struggles to stay above the darkness, and feels as though she is drowning. The Shards whispers grow louder, drawing her deeper and deeper. Until she can no longer hear him. She looks into his eyes, and it is all she can do not to cry. Guilt swells inside her chest until she thinks it will burst. The words come out in a hushed whisper. Broken with unfathomable emotion.

“I…have a secret I need to tell you...”

She pauses for a long moment, fighting back the urge to run or never speak again. She forces her voice past her tongue which grows thick with fear and guilt.

“After you…died, I found Kurai and was going to kill him. I almost succeeded, but he used…Stupefy on me…and then…”

Another long pause. She knew she didn’t need to explain the rest, but she had to face it. She had to tell him what she had not told anyone.

“…he raped me. Baraqel…is his son…”

She looks away, but the urge to run into his embrace was so great her legs trembled.

“I’m sorry…”

Her eyes close, and a single tear slides down her cheek.
