Severus closed his eyes slowly with a sigh. “I didn’t poison her mind, if that’s what you’re insinuating.” In that at least he was telling the truth; the Wraith had given her a taste of success and the ambition to try for it through his own memories – nothing more. For a moment his voice sounded as uncomfortable as it had before his jaw had been repaired. His brow furrowed as the scar on his throat itched. Maybe if you bit her she wouldn’t irritate you so, brother. I don’t need to. But you want to. The pale beast snarled at that and left Magnolia’s side, turning his back to her to stare out into the bowels of the dormant forest. Whatever beauty the dark and twisted shadows, lined with frost and the barest dusting of snow, held was lost on his frigid gaze, and for the longest time he said nothing. Naturally, being as inconsiderate of others’ private mental space as she was, Magnolia no doubt sensed that he wasn’t himself (or at least wasn’t by himself, and there is a significant difference). The wind chilled as he gathered it to his skin like an old friend, embracing it and feeling only reluctance against his body. Air had always been his element, but an unhappier coupling there had never been. It resented him for his bitterness and the dishonorable acts to which he had called it. Every action it took was a direct result of his conscious thought; it didn’t gather willingly around him like it did around Magnolia, waiting to leap at her command like a loyal pet. Severus glanced over his shoulder at the bay mare, his expression pained and unreadable. “There’s something wrong with me.” With that he raised his head a fraction, exposing the ugly and irritated scar from which dark streaks of dried blood still ran down his neck, not yet flaked off by movement. The stallion covered it again as quickly as it had been shown, his colorless eyes sweeping the surrounding forest with not a little paranoia. The shard seemed to chew at his mind in its irritation. “If I hated you now, it would have already forced me to do you harm.” This wasn’t exactly the truth; of course the shard would itself have no designs against the seer, but she didn’t know the tendencies of the shards toward destruction any more than he did. “I need your help, Magnolia.” Wasn’t that what she always wanted – to help him? A convincing performance, brother, well done. Shut up.
