He's right. She can taste his bitterness even more than she can hear it distantly (jagged and broken, like a radio out of tune - she hasn't quite gotten the hang of her Clairvoyance, not yet), and she hates herself for it; she's certain now, more certain than she's ever been of anything, that one day there will be an end to this and she will be there to see it. Renata can see his pain, can feel it, and it makes her wish more than anything that she had never agreed to this, had never followed up Kalleis's lesson and asked him to come to her so she could question him like a scientist to a lab animal.
But then, perhaps that's exactly what she needed.
She's learning that the Element is not all light and warmth, as it first seemed; first with Wyvern's lessons of the Darkness, then with Alcatraz, then with the Hellhounds, now him - her eyes have darkened since her arrival with the knowledge and the heavy weight of what looms over their heads.
"We'll stop it," she promises, stepping to him with understanding in her eyes - you've taught her well, Stelios, because now she Sees, perhaps for the first time. "I don't know how, but we will she insists fiercely; "you will not end up like he did." She doesn't know the half of it, because she wasn't there when Kale died, and she refuses to dig through his head until she found it (refuses to enter his head at all, aside from the accidental, cursory glance). Some things, she thinks, are private; the true story of how his father died was something she wouldn't delve into - she would take the bits and pieces taken from gossipmongers, and be content with them.
He asks her if she has any more questions, and she, in her sympathy, cannot find anymore.
And then, she comes up with one, but she's almost afraid to ask it, and instead drops her head, toeing at the ground with a sheepish hoof. "Will you forgive me?" she asks, lifting her head meekly - "I did what I was told to do, to further my education, so to speak, and in doing so I hurt you. Will you forgive me for that, and accept my promise that I'll do anything in my power to help you?"
She's not smiling, for once.
