Betrayal could have laughed in disbelief at the sudden change in her - as the shard bit deeper into mind and body, and twisted even her stronger Earth toward its will. He would not have believed it was possible, despite the incredible things it had already done for him, until this moment – until her shoulder brushed against his without his asking; until her playful words dribbled from lips that, moments ago, spat poison. When she turns, nymph-like, and dances away into the trees, he stands a moment unmoving, the cold air of the glade coiling in the space she once stood.
Nyota's retreating back shines silver in the moon, and the Keeper smiles cruelly, as reminders of their first meeting resurface. But he has little time to reminisce as she fades from sight; he springs to life, tracking her, a ghost-like vision of ivory among so many fingered shadows. The Glade is a canopy of haunting, bare branches - the moon is high and cold, and it lights the snow they move on with whispers of icy gray. In the absence of sound, Nyota is an easy target as she moves along the loud earth, yet Betrayal finds himself hesitating - he draws close and then she darts to the side and he pauses, allowing her precious seconds of distance until he surges forward again, laughterless and quiet. But finally, finally he draws alongside her youthful frame and kisses her hip with his teeth - a touch that, any harsher, would have drawn blood - and tosses his head as he jumps forward to cut her off.
The shard, gleaming yellow and bright beneath his skin, outlines the left half of his skull in the dark before fading.
"And now what, Polestar."
His voice is the night, but it is younger somehow; humored.
"Did you intend only to play games?"
