The trees had been stripped bare to the last leaf, and their dark boughs stood lonely and forlorn against the starlit sky, bereft of even the hardiest of avian company. Pale hoarfrost blanketed the loam like a pall, throttling what little color that the season hadn’t yet managed to bleed out. Silence reigned in the heart of the forest, and it was precisely that silence that made the summons all the more compelling. Severus... At first he tried to ignore the intrusion. On most occasions, the white stallion is firmly grounded in the present, and presently he wanted nothing more than a chance to rest in the peace that solitude granted him – but even when the earth seemed completely devoid of life, peace eluded him. The air seemed to shiver around his body, as though upset by the wakening breaths of an ancient presence. Scowling, he cast a glance into the empty forest; it was completely still, as though the entire world had died as he slept, and still the voice reached out to him with its icy grip. …did you not tell a wolf king once that you wanted…power… The Wraith’s head whipped around. Memories flooded unbidden into his consciousness: Requiem, blazing with the wrath of his own indignation, had confronted the pale beast somewhere in this very forest over the theft of his beloved trophy, Nyota. Even so far removed, the altercation chilled him – Severus was and always would be a coward, and only a threat against the bay mare’s well-being had saved him from whatever punishment the Wolf King had had in mind. More unsettling, though, was the fact that nobody had been there to witness the occurrence besides the two of them – and Requiem was long gone from this world. Something about that cunning, disembodied whisper played on his fears, assured him that Requiem’s fire would no longer trouble him if only he would answer its call. Severus knew where he had to go – it had told him, in confessing its knowledge of the past meeting – and so he made his way there, his hooves barely brushing the frosted earth in their silent haste… …and then he came upon it, glittering like a jewel as it reflected the stars in all their splendor. Hello, brother, it hissed. The soil and leaves around the shard had frozen over entirely, resembling absurd sculptures in the midnight gloom, but he had eyes only for it and its captivatingly liquid surface. His whole life Severus had desired power – true power – and here it lay before him, ripe for the taking. A sudden realization struck him and he straightened, recoiling away from the shard’s unpleasant but beguiling song. He narrowed a pale eye at the darkness, once again seeking out an enemy just beyond his sight. “What do you want from me?” Only silence answered, until – Everything.A surge of energy radiated from the tiny shard as it erupted from its icy tomb, embedding itself deep in the stallion’s throat with vicious efficiency. Severus balked, blinded by his own pain and surprise, and felt ice flowing into his veins as the thing quenched its thirst on his blood. When it spoke again, it spoke from inside him, and his throat ached where a crude star wept red tears from every ragged tip. Only everything…my brother, my keeper.
