DONE AWAY WITH PARADISE
There’s a sudden thrill inside of him, a great uprising of his Lightning and he turns to her with frantic, frenetic light in his pale eyes. There is a flash of brilliant light, a single burst of the chaotic nightmare that he can wield and then, there is stillness.
He poises, on the edge of ravenous destruction, because he recognizes something in her.
He hesitates, his head held high and recoiled, silently hissing like a crocodile in wait. And then, he lowers his head, studies her for a long moment with those anachronistic and frigid white eyes. “Courage,” he repeats, inclining his head to one side, delicately toying with the name as a swath of oil-black forelock slides across an intelligent, fascinated eye. “Perhaps there is deep truth to that name.” he says it very deliberately, half to himself. And then, at length, he tells her, “I know your sister.” He says it with a small smile now, a glimmer of triumph, of remembrance – he did it because his Lightning commanded him to, because of her Water, because of the pain that it would cause the Falconblade in his arrogance and affectations of immortality.
Kurai knows immortality; Alshain is merely an arrogant, glorified child.
Now he studies her for a moment longer, his gaze thoughtful and lingering and still edged with traces of Lightning-ravenousness subdued by forced rationality and intrigue. “You are part of a flock that has grown quite large,” he observes.
And Kurai, through his own wiles and through the rebellion of Courage’s sister, is now a part of that flock.
I’m sure this will make for some delightful thanksgiving dinners.
“My name is Kurai,” he says at last. “And frights are just part of the program in Desreal.”
Somewhere thunder trembles the earth, and little bursts of frantic static erupt from him, quaking before his inexorable darkness.
