This Dave Montgomery McClatchy Newspapers wire story appeared on page 2 of the main news section of the Sunday, Sept. 27, 2009 San Jose Mercury-News. It's well worth reading.
The Merc's last pargraph began with, "Secessionist organizations are operating at various levels of activity in Texas, Vermont, New Hampshire, Alaska and Hawaii." Here's the full story:

I discovered earlier this year at my county library that the Republic of Texas Navy actually helped win the Mexican-American War. I was perusing Theodore Roscoe and Fred Freeman's "A Picture History of the U.S. Navy".
This 1950's book would have been great reading for kids in the 1950s, as it is mostly drawings and photographs. But a section of the Texas Navy sailing down to Yucatan to destroy the Mexican Navy in the late 1830s surprised me. They ignored President James Polk's wishes to not contest the Mexican Navy. Lucky for us, they did and when the Mexican-American war broke out (1846-1848) the Mexican's Navy was not strong enough to fight the Texas and U.S. navies.

Today Mexico needs "no stinkin' navy" to take over California. But they might need one to take "The Republic of Texas".
