Do you remember several weeks ago, we said, "Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly"? Well, meet the butterfly!!
Today Jason got legs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
We came home early from our trip to Colorado and Joe's 50th high school reunion to watch our son take him first steps!! It has been a long time, yet a short time since April 15th. He has worked hard to get to this point and the excitement today was unmatched. Joe, Kathy and I blubbered while he remained focused on balance and one step at a time. At the end of 10 or so trips down the parallel bars, he was quite tired and had shakey legs. He wanted more time! Everyone said "NO", that's enough for the first day. He wanted more!
We all celebrated with milk shakes. Jason was instructed to bring shoes, so he choose a shoe two sizes smaller than previous (13), bright green and black Vans to commerate his first pair of Vans in the 80's. Joe, of course, bought him a pair of bright Orange shoes! It didn't matter, pick a size, choose a color let's GO!!
He will be in physical therapy 2 to 3 times a sweek for the legs, and another day or two for his right hand which is the hook. His left hand is really coming along so we are hopeful that an eighth surgery is not necessary. This continues to be a wait and watch process. He has physical therapy for the left hand as well. He is also undergoing acupuncture for the nerves in the left hand.
Physical therapy leaves him physically exhausted but happy! Kathy is there to "spot" him, to make sure he doesn't fall, while we hold our breaths and reach out with silent arms. He is very explicit about "doing it himself"!!
What can we say except Thank You to all of you who continue to stick with us, pray for him and us, and send us good vibes and mojo. We honestly believe we are where we are today because of all of your good wishes.
We aren't done yet, but the light at the end of the tunnel is in sight and we are going for it!! The attached picture (see this on Rat Line Blog page) was taken today only moments after the first few steps. We wanted to be sure you all were a part of the whole first step. We have learned over the past few months that first steps are important.
Again Thank Your for your Love, Kindness and support and know that we cherish everyone of you!!!!
We love you all. The joes
