Taxes, Taxes and More “Green” Taxes
On Friday, June 26th, Democratic leaders in the House of Representatives rammed through a nearly 1,500 page national energy tax bill, which included a 300 page amendment they inserted at 3 a.m. on the day of the vote (meaning: supporters of the legislation didn’t read what they were supporting), that will increase costs for any American who pays an electric bill, shops at a grocery store or fills up their gas tank.
To be frank, if this bill passes the Senate, and the President signs it, essentially every Wisconsinite will be paying higher costs all around for their energy consumption. Additionally, consumers will feel the pinch in other products they buy, as companies will pass along their increased energy costs to individuals buying their products. That’s why I call this bill “cap-and-tax” – while it won’t be a separate listing on your bills, you will be taxed for this legislation over and over again.
I’ve never voted for a tax increase, and that’s the first of many reasons why I voted against this terrible legislation. Wisconsinites don’t need added costs to their bills right now.
And while you’ll be paying more for electric services, with this legislation, you’ll also be paying to help build windmills in China and employ individuals overseas – another reason I voted against this bill.
The cap-and-tax bill includes nearly $2.2 trillion in international wealth transfer by 2050. It stands to be the biggest non-military foreign aid bill in history. Under this flawed legislation, funding for international wealth transfers is 210 times larger than funding for domestic heating aid, 119 times larger than funding for domestic building improvements and 111 times larger than clean vehicle technology.
In addition to the money this bill sends to China, the Waxman-Markey “cap-and-tax” bill builds a pipeline of jobs to the developing world. A Heritage Foundation study found that this bill would result in the elimination of 1.1 million jobs in the U.S. While this legislation will increase our unemployment numbers, many of these jobs will re-emerge in China, India and other developing nations.
Environmentalists may claim it’s worth paying higher prices to save the environment; however, this legislation only reduces global temperatures by approximately two-tenths of a degree over the next 100 years.
This bill costs American taxpayers more money and more jobs. I urge everyone in the Fifth District to let Senators Feingold and Kohl know that Wisconsinites don’t want “cap and tax.”
(And if it means anything to Californians, let Feinstein and Boxer know what you think.—O'D)
