As mentioned before, another tricky element in this is the cumulative mp3 artefacts don't play nicely with the sort of compression and clipping involved in AM processing. But the Optimod 9200 is way better and more forgiving than the DSPX AM was in this respect. This amount of top on the DSPX sound really harsh.
Yes, the modulation needs to go up, and a replacement box of tricks added to allow remote control (which doesn't include that level tweak. It's a hardware pot on the front panel. Actually it's two. One for each transmitter. It's the pre-emphasis that's probably the crucial tweak regarding the top end but that, along with general eq tweaking is better done remotely whilst in nicer listening conditions.
In the meantime I've added a little bottom end at Strood with a digital parametric EQ device, as it needed more beef.
