I believe we can blame Rajar for the very poor state of music radio in the UK. Commercial stations have to sell auduence figures to advertisers, and so they have to play to Rajar's weaknesses. That's why stations have such restricted playlists, ie. you always hear your favourite song when you tune in. It's also why long blocks of ads are bunched up in the second half of each hour. Playing uninterrupted music in the first half of each hour helps get ticks in the Rajar diary. It means that statisticians and number crunchers control the station's output rather than knowledgeable, passionate radio people.
