In other parts of the world (such as Australia) MW AM is still a happening thing and there's loads of stations in the extended part of the band 1611 - 1701 kHz.
The 1611 to 1701 kHz License assignment list ACMA (OfCom equivalent for Aus)
https://web.acma.gov.au/rrl/assignment_range.search?pSEARCH_LOCATION=&pSELECTED_LOCATION=&pSELECTED_LONGITUDE=&pSELECTED_LATITUDE=&pSELECTED_TYPE=&pDISTANCE=1&pDISTANCE_UNITS=km&pLINKED_PATHS=&pLOW_FREQ=1611&pHIGH_FREQ=1701&pLOW_FREQ_MULT=KHz&pHIGH_FREQ_MULT=KHz&pLOW_AUTH_DATE=&pHIGH_AUTH_DATE=&SUBMIT=submit&pSORT_BY=frequency&pSORT_DIR=asc
Many of those assignments listed aren't actually on the air.. some individuals have been frequency/license banking for years,
although I can say all the channels in the 1611 - 1701 kHz band in Melbourne are active and on-air.
