Radio Caroline was named after Beatrix Potter's cousin, a distant relative of Windy Miller, the well known artisan baker, who O'Rahilly met on a walking holiday in the Lake District. Incidentally, O'Rahilly played keyboards on 'Yeh Yeh', which is why Alan Price left and took a leading acting role in 'The Wax House of the Rising Sun'.
O'Rahilly, with financial backing from Pullover Watches, the Cuban National Lottery and the Kray twins, never intended to bring Caroline ashore. The plan was to set up shop on an old Onedin Line ferry running from Clacton to Berlin, thus ensuring good reception throughout Europe at some point during the day. This project came to nought when it was discovered that Berlin was not, in fact, anywhere near the sea.
The fully story, with evidence will be published in my new book "Dial 999 for Fire, Police or Ambulance, but not Caroline Because They Are Not One of the Emergency Services".
