Re: Carolines future, article a good read
I think if you have the means then why not keep 648 kHz operating.. There is a certain old world charm about MW/MF AM broadcasting and interestingly it's still a ratings winner over here is Oz. I think switching the station to Today's Releases/Tomorrow's Hits would be a mistake because 70-90% of airtime is devoted to the music being played and 10-30% thereabouts is devoted to spoken word (I'm guessing at these rubbery figures).. So if it's playing todays music then already it's lost the nostalgia and charm of the past.. And really it's all about the nostalgia and charm of a lost era.. Ships at Sea, Jingles, the vibrancy of when recorded music was new and exciting.. There's over 100,000 tracks added to Spotify every day... so there's too much new music to choose between.. Besides, you can listen to new music all day just by clicking on Spotify, Apple, YouTube, Amazon etc.. so it's well supplied.. In the old days of expensive recording studios, pressing plants, artwork and sleeve printing etc.. there was a very finite number of records being released as it was an expensive business to be in and radio was everything as far as these records were concerned..If you wanted to sell records you had to court radio and hopefully get high rotation airplay. Music business today is all about streaming numbers and there's virtually no barrier to entry.. every iPhone Mac and iPad comes with GarageBand - a recording studio built in at no extra charge complete with virtual instruments, drums, effects and really all you need to make finished masters. (Yes there's more sophisticatedDAW software out there too such as Cubase Pro, Logic Pro etc..). So I think everything is going niche and definitely not mass market.. in fact it's hard for big budget movies, TV and new music to go mass market... ask anyone in the street what's number one on the charts and nearly everyone wouldn't have a clue, and besides.. there's so many charts.. I don't think there's the interest anymore..
