With any radio station or other organisation, someone has to be (at least nominally) in charge, and whether you like it or not, Ronan delegated that task to Peter Moore. He took decisions based on what he thought was best in the circumstances at the time. Sometimes with 20/20 hindsight people like to re-run the timeline and invent conspiracy theories etc. But I have no doubt that Peter has always acted in good faith and with the best interests of the station and the people involved at heart. He gave a commitment to the DTI that the ship would not broadcast after the new law came in - why? Because this was the only way to ensure that supplies could reach the ship and people didn't starve. Remember that his neck was on the line too - he could have been hauled in by the authorities at any time, they knew exactly what his involvement was. Peter has stated on this forum that he begged Ronan to bring the ship into port while a 'third world license' was being sought - why? Because he knew he was putting people's lives at risk on an unsafe ship that was parked precariously with a dodgy anchor system right next to the world's busiest shipping lanes.
If the elusive 'third world license' had come to fruition I have no doubt that Peter would have been delighted for Caroline to have continued as an offshore broadcaster. But no such license was ever forthcoming and the ship was wrecked on the Goodwin Sands. Thank God no-one was killed or seriously injured in that event, but then the ship was hauled into Dover, and then what to do next? Decisions were made and Caroline continued in a different environment, and as has been repeatedly demonstrated this was with the consent and support of Ronan.
By all means disagree about the music format and presentation style, it's a popular hobby amongst those who post here. Personally I really disliked the 'Kylie and Jason' 558 era, although I accept that others liked it and I don't feel the need to insult them (or the people involved) for that. But I go back to my comment earlier in this thread - no-one has brought forward any evidence to support Neil's ridiculous allegation that PM deliberately engineered the events of the late 80s/early 90s so that he could 'steal' radio Caroline and prevent it from broadcasting from the sea. He was simply living in the real world and engaging in the 'art of the possible' rather than the fantasy world that others were (and in some cases still are) living in.
Doubtless there are others who will want to have the last word on this and will come back with more negative vitriol, but I'm out of here and will continue listening to one of the three streams currently available from Radio Caroline.
