Does this mean? they are Trying to Make the figures for DAB Listening, Look better than they really are?
Why are Ofcom convinced, that DAB is the way forward, but in practice, its just another platform,
Good in big cities, but Inferior to FM in lots of UK Locations
With an Internet phone, linked into the cars speakers, this puts listening to Internet only
good "Bedroom FM" stations, on a level playing field, with "proper" radio stations with transmitters,
As others have said, only problem is, it uses up all your data
No cost to Using DAB,(once you got the set) its "real" radio, with transmitters,
but costs radio station a fortune to keep running it, let alone set it up
Things have to be cost effective, DAB isn't. Peter Moore's DAB article, spot on.
DAB TX's cost a lot more £ than FM ones, Big boys in radio, control the Big DAB multiplexes,
pricing out smaller stations, to keep them off as competition
Too Many stations are Crammed on, at low bit rates, Even in MONO What! to save site money
DAB MPEG2 needs around 192k for reasonable results, to be as good as FM,
and that's assuming you can get a DAB signal
When TalkSport first went on DAB, the Quality was Worse than its Medium wave,
but its "Digital" oow...Must get me Digital hair drier on order !
DAB works best, like a Cellphone network, with several Transmitters, to get the coverage,
but for SSDAB for Community stations, this will cost them a small fortune,
not just to set up, but ongoing costs, for linking other stations audio up to the DAB site
Here In Northamptonshire, where Connect FM has just come Off DAB, (because of a Price Hike)
Two New DAB sites were put in a while back, Both Running 300W, less than 8Km apart (5 miles)
(Wellingboro and Earls Barton) and SSDAB is said to be less watts than 300
And as for the Digital switch over/ FM switch off crap, FM would be full of Pirates the next week
