Could low power 'hobby' radio soon become possible in the UK, is it in the pipeline. Any ideas on this?
If someone had suggested this 3 months ago just before I visited the website for the Mosquito 1w MW TX! I would have said no chance in the UK you have to be joking. The Guy there Toney says "This 1 Watt AM Transmitter has been designed to cater for the new 1 Watt Low Power AM standards being introduced worldwide" Ok I read that and thought oh yea like hell in this wonderful country of zero freedom not likely.
I thought no more of it ie the above, some few weeks latter however just to catch up with a friend I gave him a call and during the chat he told me he had been busted by Ofcom for running a 3w FM TX and that at the end of their visit to my friends home he put it to the Ofcom chap in charge of the visit! That we should be given the same freedom as in the US and other countries! And he told me that much to his surprise the guy looked at him and gave a tiny nod and said Yes and it may well happen! OK make of this what you will, but one thing I can guarantee is that if this is what my friend said then its as it happened this guy is as honest as you will find and if he said this took place then it certainly did. So maybe the statement by the guy selling the MW 1w TX wasn't as frivolous as I first thought Who knows.
You would be surprised what you can do with 1w MW with the right Earthing, Radials, and Counterpoiseing, plus an horizontal for convenience totally isolated electrical 1/4 wave freestanding would go a few mile, less once you start incorporating loading coils to make up for short comings in the antenna length depending on availability of space but even then done right it would still go a fair way.
Be good if it happened! I still remain very skeptical.
