You're looking in the right direction Mike. 70s radios from the likes of Grundig, ITT and Bang & Olufsen are the way to go. The B&Os plus some of the larger Grundigs are now starting to fetch silly money but models such as the Grundig Music Boy can certainly hold their own and run forever on a PP9 battery or external power pack. Roberts R707s are ok aswell but tend to suffer from s/c AF11* transistors making them appear lifeless. Quick fix if you can solder and often leads to them being sold off cheaply in the first place.
Don't get too hung up on selectivity though .... a bit of adjacent channel splatter will help the whole thing sound far more authentic!!
