I was there in the early eighties too.
Mainly white guys running the Pirate stations.
irrespective of the style of music played.
The landbased pirates mainly came from white middle class suburbia.They broadcast from houses at first and when that got too dangerous,moved to fields.Even when the gradual move from MW to FM came,it was still mainly from suburban fields.
It was when the potential of inner city tower blocks was spotted that it gradually began to change.Black kids started to get involved and helped the existing stations.Then some wanted to start their own stations,many of us helped them to achieve that.
Then,as Dave says,some more unsavoury types started to see some money making potential,not just in pirate radio,but with what it could add to businesses they were already running.
It was at that point that many of us white,suburban,free radio advocates decided that it was time to get out.
The game had changed.
