The Dutch are not so restrained as we Brits are in the use of strong language, and dear old Ronnie Dolman was on the air at the time and announced, in all innocence and as Caroline Public Service that "There's the biggest ever wanker boat just sailing up now" (it was the good ship Zeester, one of Jac Vrolijk's finest).
It was agreed that there had to be another word used on the air for such visitors, and Andy was holding court in the mess when Dick Palmer said "Well they all wear these hooded anoraks, and have a duffle bag (full of Stevi Merike tapes for swapping!) over their shoulder -lets call them Anoraks for the time being. And it stuck. Now it may have been Andy who suggested it, but Dick thinks it was him - but with all the stuff that got smoked in that mess room, it could have been anyone.
That is where it happened, and roughly then - maybe someone has got a recording of the visit early in 1973? It was probably one of Hans Verbaan's trips, and it was about Feb or maybe March I think. (Rob Westhof maybe? Is Ronnie Dolman still around???)
I'm quite proud to call myself an Anorak - with hood firmly up and tied, and fur trimmed of course!
