As previously mentioned , quite a few receivers of that era seemed to pick up such things. I'm guessing the Morse was actually in what was know as the trawler band - around 1700 - 1800 KHZ or Topband to radio amateurs. If the out of band signal was very strong , would it appear at the I.F frequency above the received frequency - 455KHZ on a lot of Medium wave receivers.
I'm not certain how the low Marine band signals at around 500 KHZ get imaged into the medium wave band though - I.F frequency below received frequency maybe or double the I.F frequency below maybe ? This doesn't seem to happen now days maybe because receivers are more selective - too much so some might say, making AM sound very flat and also maybe because shipping tends not to use those frequencies as much any more.
