Paul: surely he cannot be held responsible for his predecessors old debts ...
I would need check my land law notes, but I seem to remember that much depends on the terms of the lease and whether covenants flow from old lessees to new lessees. The lease may have been assigned or sub letting may be involved.
A new lessor could very well be liable for his predecessor's debts if he has effectively (or knowingly) agreed to that or his solicitor has failed to ensure that the necessary protections are in place.
