Ian,
I've tried to keep an open mind about this, and if Neil would just tell us when his 'real' programming will actually start (assuming that what we're currently hearing is not the finished article) that would help some of us suspend our disbelief just a little bit longer.
If you want my honest opinion, right from day one I haven't believed that Neil's offshore station would be coming into existence this July, or at any other time for that matter. The storyline has changed many times as the months have gone by, and Neil has made the classic mistake of over-promising and under-delivering, instead of doing it the other way round (which I've always found works far better). He's also managed to antagonise and insult a lot of people who would probably otherwise have rallied round and given him their (at least moral) support.
My personal viewpoint is that it doesn't really matter where the station broadcasts from; it's what the programming is like that really counts. So if Neil is about to announce the start of his proper programming, and it turns out to be the best thing since sliced bread, then we can all listen in and enjoy it, can't we?
In the meantime, I've found another (currently much better IMO) station that plays oldies for when I feel in the mood for that sort of thing. And at other times, there are a whole load of other stations out there with a vast variety of music and other stuff to keep me entertained. Including Caroline, which is still my preferred music station in spite of all the alternatives available. I know that last comment will irritate some people, but frankly (to quote my American friends) "I could care less".
My disappointment about this board is all the doom and gloom negativity. Sure, we don't have any radio ships on the air these days, but look at the opportunities that exist for anyone to start their own 'bedroom' station and be heard around the world for just a modest outlay and effort. The main ingredients for success are talent and imagination, not money. And I say good luck to everyone who has a go, regardless of the number of listeners they end up with.
So Neil, good luck for the official start of Cruisin' 531 programmes. When will that happen?
