I made a comment in the middle of another thread about banned songs, and its a fave topic of mine. The BBC will maintain they didn't ban certain songs, they just "didn't play them much" - or in the case of things like We Love the Pirates, j'taime, Rita's Ertotica, etc, ect, not play them at all!
It was She Likes Weeds,a great old Veronica hit from way back that prompted me to this topic again. Ruud Doets reminded me of it - even Phil Solomon sort of banned that as he had the UK licence and wouldn't release it. I remember writing to him at the time (remember that, writing letters ?) and got a note back from the ever lovely Joanne Thirkettle, RIP. They did put out Ma Belle Amie though.
So what else did the Beeb 'ban' ?
All the Judge Dread songs for a start - but RNI played them
All the Prince Buster songs for another
Sally was a Good old Girl, by Shocking Blue
Hi Hi Hi by Wings (Apple got cold feet so flipped it for C-Moon)
Give Ireland back to the irish, also by Wings
Woman is the Nigger of the world by John Lennon.
- over to you guys . . . . . .
