Leon Seiter, from Michigan, has been singing in honky-tonks for more than forty years. His traditional approach to country received national attention his record “Sentenced to Live”, gained airplay throughout the United States, Canada, Germany, and France.
Since then Leon has had five singles charting nationally including; “You Can Always Count on Me”, “Love Is Just a Game”, and “Under You Spell Again” culled from his current album “In the Shadows of a Honky Tonk”. During the early 70’s, Leon recorded “Rags to Riches”, which made country charts across the States following this with such hits as “Mr. Jones”, “What Is This Man”, “Someone On Your Phone”, “To Make My World Go Round” and "You Can Always Count On Me". Throughout the years Leon has opened shows across the America for several top performers. Leon lists Hank Williams, Ernest Tubb, Marty Robbins, and Johnny Cash as his main influences and this is reflected in his song writing always based on the traditional country themes; pain, sorrow, love, God and the simple country life. Leon was inducted into the Michigan Country Music Hall of Fame in 2000 and America’s Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame in 2004. Leon’s new album, “The Shadows Of A Honky Tonk” (Legend), is the perfect showcase for this preserver of roots country music with ten songs, originals and covers, that so beautifully remind the listener of what country music really is. From the opening cut, Buck Owens “Under Your Spell Again” to the close with Howard Walker’s “In The Shadow Of A Honky Tonk”, this is a vastly entertaining tour of traditional country styles and themes. Seiter’s own songs, “I’ve Seen The Devil Have His Way”, rightly chosen as the new single, “Where True Love Waits For Me” and “I Wonder Where Love Goes” will in due time become country standards. Also included in this totally country programme is Wayne Walker’s perennial favourite “I’ve Got A New Heartache”. My thanks to EHK of Santa Fe for providing this wonderful album. www.leonseiter.com
Remembering: Ninety years ago today (15 February) Hank Locklin was born in Florida. He learned to love country music working on a cotton farm where he also learned to pick guitar. After the Second World War Hank gained a place on the Louisiana Hayride and began recording for Decca then Four Star. His first hit was “Let Me Be The One” but it would be another four years, when he signed with RCA, before he became a star with such memorable hits as “Geisha Girl”, “Send Me The Pillow You Dream On” and “Please Help Me I’m Falling”. During the late sixties Hank returned to Florida where he bought a ranch that included the cotton field he had worked as a kid and became Mayor of McLellan.
Remember there are stars in the southern sky,
