I have to agree with Slo Fizz here. I see the people this affects everyday. The freedoms we have are nice.. but the fact is; these freedoms were tangible long before GW took oath. He has done us a tremendous job of guiding us post 9/11 as compared to how I feel VP Gore would have done. Or John Kerry for that matter.
But the facts are as follows. How can a lower wage earning family survive while spending a VERY large portion of their paycheck on GASOLINE? Minimum wage is what? $5.75? And I know not everyone has to work for minimum wage. But some do. Lots do.. It is a pretty sad day in time when you have to choose between spending your last few bucks on gas to get to work and putting light over your children's heads, food on the table or shoes on their feet. Not everyone had the opportunity to go to college in order to get the better jobs. And fortunately for Jay Leno, he is a part of the percentile who isn't really affected by the economy/gas prices. In order to become accustomed to the gas price hike.. he may have had to adjust from leasing a hummer to leasing a lexus. He hasn't had to go until payday without electricity or water. And I am sure he is pretty far from losing his house to the bank. I see this stuff everyday..I work for the city in which I live's utility company and I am forced to disconnect 100s of people's services every week. Three years ago when I started this job, it may have been 20 people a week who forgot their bill was due on the 20th and forgot to pay. These days, there are hundreds of people in my small town who CAN'T pay every single week. The local churches "community action" program (which assists people with things like utilities and food) ran out of funds less than 90 days into the year.
Numbers lie.. People are losing jobs and houses as I speak. Independant contractors are out of work because the housing construction market is so terrible. Plumbers, carpenters, electricians, HVAC, landscapers, you name it.. they are all taking a hit.
The economy sucks right now people. You can copy and paste all the statistics you all want and it's not going to change the facts that I see everyday.
And if you think for a second that this "stimulus" check stimulated anything other than Credit card and gas companies, you are an idiot.
I guess Leno was right about thing.. No matter how bad we have it.. somebody in some third world country has it worse. Maybe Leno and his rich celebrity buddies should be forced to forfeit a bigger chunk of their salaries to help and stimulate the blue collar little man. Then we'd be reading a lot less about the rest of the world's problems and a lot more about his own. Then GW would be like that son of a b*tch Robin Hood.
