I've seen many breeds being used for ratting, Jack Russells, Borders, Patterdales, Lakelands, various crosses, even a few staffies. The best ratters in my opinion are Plummer Terriers, they have a hell of a nose on them thanks to the Beagle blood used in there creation, my dads dog Max bred by Brian Plummer
would always know where the rats were lying up, these dogs are dead game too with a single mindedness like no other, there a beautifully athletic dog too and wonderful to watch at work with there firey red and white markings. Max sired a few litters in his day, one dog went to a foxhound hunt kennel in Wales, a dog called Chisum. We had a b###h called Tia she was a great dog, she'd follow me everywhere, i could whistle her from anywhere across the fields and she would come straight to my feet, looking up at me wagging her tale, she was a special dog and an excellent worker.
Here's a few links for Plummer Terriers,
