Sterling offers himself as a pawn to Hypatia. He would bend his water to her fire’s will, if that’s what she wants. His loyalty was not for the land but for the queen, and that is where Sterling was different from those of the Viper who would follow orders. It was for the nation. It would not matter if they were wolves, snakes, or jaegers. What mattered with Hypatia.
The flames that lick at his lips make a thunder of adrenaline run through his body, as water hisses in return, large drops falling from him, and the steam scorching around his nose with a desert-severe heat. But Sterling is fine, as his gait carries him up for his head against her back. And he can feel her move, the slow, as she speaks. Hazel eyes watch her quietly for a moment, and he makes sure he does not run into her as se turns around. In fact, Sterling stops a few feet before she does, and watches her, with a curious face, the smile gone.
He had been smiling. It was true, that Hypatia most likely could take Sterling, it the idea was a humorous one to say the least, but her panting words make it stop. Caution creeps into his lean, desert-worn face, and his tail flicks warily. Quietly, he responds.
“Do you want me to catch you?”
Sterling steps back, his heart thumping.
“You,”
His breath catches and he is unsure.
“If it’s what you want, you can run, Hypatia,”
It feels like the word ‘away’ was taken from the sentence. The run was not any sort of freeing activity in the context in the tone of his voice. But it’s not hostility. Of no, Sterling would never be hostile towards her, he was unsure. His heart palpitates and flutters and his water squeezes inside of him, a sick waterlogged feeling. So he creates distance. Nose yearns for her burning body, but there was enough heat coming off his flushed body, that Sterling surprised it wasn’t sustained by that.
“…and, and I’ll still be here, and I’ll catch you when you’re done,”
His head nods and he whispers, eyes falling for the sand,
“I’m sorry, Hypatia,”
Suddenly Sterling felt guilty and pushy and rude, and it overwhelmed him, the idea of having suffocated the queen and it begins to settle disturbingly in his mind, but he smiles (still not look at her), and tells her, with a slight cough through his voice,
“When you tell me to, I’ll come,”
