It must be easy to be like Hypatia. Or, at least, easier.

Oh, your life is complex in the way all lives are complex. But you know what you fight for. What you love, what you hate, what you must do and how. That’s simple. That’s clear. I suppose it comes with morals, an ideal I am very lacking in – never saw the point, but, anyway. Moving on. She knows that she hates the shards; that she loves the deserts; that she is a relic-bearer and a queen and, indeed, successful ones. She knows where she stands.

Yeah, must be easy to have everything figured out like this.

Alas, a benefit I don’t have.

My life is simple. That’s what messes it up. The very simplicity of it all.

It doesn’t make sense, I know. It doesn’t have to; I hardly do make sense.

The sand is hot beneath my feet, to my infinite amusement. By nightfall it will be dead again, cold as a graveyard; but that doesn’t matter. I know that simply standing here is courting danger; there are some who would like to break me, or hurt me, or just generally do something to me.

Hell, I almost wish they would.

It would be a break in the norm, at least.

The boring, old norm.

Bleh. Whatever.

The desert has very few shadows (the literal ones, not the espionage ones – they’ve none of those), which is annoying but not so much that I can’t be amused by it. The dunes form pools of darkness; oases have more and are easier to sense. The water in me is pleased to find so very little of its kindred here.

Mm.

Maybe if stupid Stelios wasn’t such a major wuss to bail out on us in a fit of teenaged angst. Funny how time puts things in perspective, isn’t it? How we learn things.

Or, maybe not. Hypatia is silly, after all.

And Solira has cooties. Big ones. Weapon-of-mass-destruction grade cooties.

Guess I’m stuck with the stereotype.
