He speaks, his watery breath, and she’s attracted to it and repulsed by it all at once. She wants to speak (simply because she cannot stand silence) but his body is so cool and his scent so nice, and his voice so calm that she drowns in it. These water types: they simply overwhelm her, drown her in their power.

He opens his mind willingly and freely…she’s never had anyone want her inside them so intimately before. They usually hide from her, and she screams inside her own head because of the limitations. But he opens his metaphysical arms and she embraces him. His mind is her playground, and she caresses it, loves it, enjoys it.

She wishes he could enjoy her mind just as much.

“I wish you could like Ni for other reasons.” If there was anything about him she did not live, it was that he did not see Ni for the amazing feeling of the desert sands and the heat and the power of the sun. He may never understand it. “Besides me.” Because one day she may not be here. Will he leave then? Leave Ni when they need him?

She laughs with her marshmallow laugh, “Yes, I suppose.” She keeps them glued together, keeps them cooled, keeps them focused. She protects him – but he’s right. She needs her own protection. Just a little, a sense of it. You can do whatever you want. Violent images flash through her mind. None of them involving fighting or shards. The Naphtha smiles for the fact that her mind and countenance are hidden.

They breathe, and steam, and she smokes, and he bubbles. There is silence and warmth and coolness. She doesn’t want to leave his side, because he’ll protect her, and he’ll always be there for her. “Run.” It’s a whisper before she realizes it came out. She’s pulling away from him, turning away without their eyes meeting.

“Catch me.”

She’s off, desert sands brushed up behind her and her laughter covered the growing red horizon.
